At Darell, we hope that by taking part in sport,
children will learn to value the benefits of physical activities, and
continue with games and sports through life. Children are encouraged to
aim for success and to enjoy participating in physical activities. There
is no restriction based on gender for taking part in any activity. We
aim to ensure that all our children take part in at least 2 hours of
physical activities each week during school hours. The school has
recently been awarded the Active Mark which recognises schools’
achievements in physical education.
Our playground is well used for sports, supplemented by
our two halls. The big hall, which converts into a gymnasium, is a
superb facility for physical education. We also use North Sheen
recreation ground, only half a block away from the school, for team
games, sports and athletics. We have a school sports day for infants and
junior children. We take part in the track and field events of the
borough sports. We also take part in the borough swimming gala. All our
junior children have swimming lessons once a week for one term each year
as part of the curriculum. Besides playing friendly matches with
neighbouring schools, our football and netball teams take part in the
local leagues.
There is a wide range of free clubs run by school staff
or volunteers and a number of clubs run by outside agencies that make a
charge, including netball, football, athletics, yoga and dance and
children have opportunities to receive coaching in rugby, basketball and
tennis during school hours.
We also have links with Harlequins rugby club and our
Year 4 children have played a match during the half time period of a
Harlequins game.
