Inclusion
| |
Darell Primary
School is proud to be a very inclusive school. We
value the abilities and achievements of all pupils and strive to
provide the best possible environment for learning. We are
committed to giving all our children every opportunity to
achieve the highest of standards regardless of age, gender,
ethnicity, attainment or social background.
We recognise that many pupils will have additional needs at some
time during their school life and the school's Inclusion
policies and practice help pupils to move towards managing their
needs and achieving their full potential.
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Children
whose first language is not English have educational needs of a
particular kind. Such children's progress depends on our
clarifying their needs and meeting them.
We make a record of the home language of all children and inform
the class teachers. Special EAL teaching assistants offer small
groups or 1:1 assistance as required.
We know that recognising and reinforcing the value of a child's
home language is the first step in helping a bilingual pupil
learn English. There is ample evidence that proficiency in one
language accelerates progress in others.
Children with Special Educational Needs
(SEN)
Darell, like all schools, is required to make provision for
children whose educational needs require provisions that are
additional to, or different from, that normally provided in
ordinary schools. SEN Code of Practice 2001
At Darell we have a highly organised and effective special needs
provision to diagnose learning difficulties as early as
possible. This is through systematic screening procedures and
carefully targeted support. A specialist teacher (SENCO) is
responsible for overseeing this work.
The teaching style of the school is one of striving to ensure
that individual children have their educational needs met. This
happens through group teaching or when children have work set at
appropriate levels of difficulty.
Some children simply need to have their progress carefully
monitored; others require active intervention. Children may have
additional help from our special educational needs staff, who
work alongside class teachers giving regular targeted help to
children.
Children with greater difficulties have priority in calling on
our resources. Parents/carers are encouraged to share in, and
contribute to, special needs records.
We have access to professional help from agencies such as
Educational Psychologists employed by the Local Authority,
Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, school
nursing service and Educational Welfare Officers (EWO).
Children who have considerable learning difficulties may need to
be the subject of a "statement of educational need", a formal
document setting out their educational needs. Should this
happen, parents/carers are partners in the procedure; they
contribute to the statement and are fully informed at every
step.
Gifted and Talented (G & T)
Darell
is an inclusive school that seeks to offer all children the best
possible provision. This means that we rise to the challenge of
the gifted and talented children who are present in every age
group. All teachers have access to additional resources for
children who need extending beyond the curriculum requirements.
We participate in borough-led initiatives that are aimed at able
children.
Darell's emphasis on visits, visitors, curriculum weeks and
direct experience provides the children with enticing and open
experiences that encourage depth of thought and a love of
learning.
Child Protection (safeguarding)
At Darell the health, safety and well-being of all our children
are of paramount importance to us. Our children have the right
to protection and they have the right to be safe in school. The
school has the duty to protect children in school and to deal
appropriately with any information concerning the protection of
children outside of the school environment.
All staff undertake regular Child Protection training to ensure
that any signs of abuse are recognised and that correct
procedures are followed. The school's Child Protection named
officer is the headteacher. All matters relating to Child
Protection concerns are passed to the named officer who will
liaise directly with Social Services when necessary.
Darell has an outstanding record in child protection. "The
Headteacher, the staff and governors ensure that safeguarding
procedures are of the highest quality."
