Darell PTA is a thriving concern which makes many thousands of pounds
annually to buy all the extras that enrich our children's education,
from theatre trips and ICT equipment, to visits from famous children's
authors during book week. It is a wonderful and rewarding way to really
get involved with the school and many friendships have been made at our
multitude of fund-raising events.

The playground project
The school PTA decided in 2008 that their
fundraising should focus on helping develop the school playground. In
doing this we decided to go back to basics, asking the school council
for the pupils’ views on what they most wanted from their playground.
The teachers also discussed ideas for redevelopment at staff meetings
and their INSET day in January. We observed the children at play, and
spoke to the lunchtime supervisors to get their views.
In addition the most well-regarded charity
working on school grounds, Learning through Landscapes, has visited the
school to advise us on how we could use the school grounds most
effectively. LTL has produced a
report which you can access here.
Most of those we spoke to said that the most
logical thing would be to swap the playgrounds round, so that the
juniors would play in the larger playground, and the infants in the
smaller one. So that is what we plan to do.
All this consultation also led to seven
'guiding principles' for the new playground. In brief they are:
-
More challenges -
especially for Juniors
-
Growing area
-
More green space
-
Better quiet areas
-
Soften the edges
-
Better outside teaching
space
-
Quick wins - things we
can do now to improve the playgrounds for current students
