Curriculum: Music
| |
Music enriches the aesthetic life of
the school and is an important part of the children's
education. Darell has a music specialist on the staff.
All classes have special music lessons in which children
listen, appraise, improvise, compose and perform
together. They experience many different kinds of music,
including national, international, European and world
music. The music specialist works closely with all the
class teachers to ensure cross-curricular links and to
encourage musical performances for family and friends
during class assemblies and school concerts.
The specialist teacher develops the children's
experience of music through singing, movement, dance,
drama and percussion. The school has an excellent range
of tuned and untuned percussion instruments from around
the world.
Children are given the opportunity to learn the violin,
piano, guitar, drums and singing with visiting teachers
from Richmond Music Trust and Kew Young Musicians.
Instrumental tuition is available individually or in
small groups during the daytime at school. Other
extra-curricular musical activities include descant
recorder lessons and a Rock School.
There
is a large and enthusiastic school choir which meets
weekly out of school hours. Children are encouraged to
join the choir which participates in many special
occasions, including concerts, festivals and
celebrations. There is also a school orchestra open to
all children.
During each daily assembly the whole school listens to
live or recorded music. We arrange contemporary,
classical,
multi-cultural concerts and workshops in school, given
by a variety of specialist musicians with whom we have
developed contacts.
Many children regularly attend concerts in London which
are arranged through the school. We have valuable
associations with The Royal Opera House at Covent
Garden, English National Opera at The Coliseum and The
London Philharmonic Orchestra at The Royal Festival
Hall. The children attend opera, ballet and orchestral
performances. |
