Curriculum: Maths
| |
We aim to foster an enthusiasm for
mathematics in all our children and help
them
to develop their mathematical abilities to the full. The
Numeracy Strategy builds on early experiences and
emphasises knowledge, understanding and skills and the
use of number, shape, measure and handling data. These
different aspects of maths are taught through a
structured daily numeracy session. Where appropriate,
the children also use and apply maths in other areas of
the curriculum.
We place a strong emphasis on mental maths to develop
basic skills. A great deal of the learning is through
stimulating activities and practical problem solving in
real and meaningful contexts. Alongside these
experiences children will learn to read and interpret
mathematical symbols and use pictures, diagrams,
jottings and empty number lines to support their
thinking. Over time, children learn written methods of
calculation. We also encourage children to explain
decisions, methods and results using mathematical
language. We want to equip our children with the
mathematical skills needed in everyday life and the
confidence and ability to apply them in practical
situations. |
