Curriculum: Literacy

English at Darell is taught through quality texts. In a sense, every lesson is a literacy lesson as language work is required in every aspect of a child's school life.

Language is the key to success at school and the better the language skills, the greater children's success in other areas will be. Some of the most important language skills, such as the ability to describe or express abstract thoughts, are also the most difficult to teach, learn and measure.

Reading and writing is an area where a true partnership between home and school is vital. From the outset, we give parents/carers information to

build up that partnership, so that children can learn more effectively. Invariably, successful readers have had considerable support from parents/carers and the school.

Drama lessons form an important part of the English curriculum. They also contribute to the development of verbal skills and build the children's confidence and sensitivity. Children at Darell have opportunities to see plays professionally acted and to perform for an audience.

Media and technology play an increasingly significant role. Children in the school reflect upon their own experience as readers and writers of a range of media.

We aim to teach each child to speak clearly and confidently; to listen actively; to write with correct spelling and grammar, with clear handwriting, originality, feeling and sincerity; and to read with fluency and understanding to the fullest extent of his or her capabilities.
