Science

Return to main Curriculum Page

Science is an important subject in primary schools, and the National Curriculum puts it equal with English and mathematics as one of the three core subjects. Darell has been fortunate to have had a series of outstanding science co-ordinators over past years, who developed our awareness of the importance of science teaching.

Science week - making candles.... ....making structures

In Key Stage 1 the children begin to learn the intellectual and practical skills which will allow them to learn about and explore science in everyday life.

Making electrical circuits

By the age of seven the children will have studied: living things- animals and plants, electricity, energy, light and sound.

Key Stage 2 builds on this with an increasing knowledge and understanding of science.

Science Week - making shoes... and making yummy pizza!

The children learn about scientific questioning and investigation. They learn how to gather evidence and how to test ideas. They learn how to communicate scientifically using, for example, computers, graphs, diagrams, tables and bar charts.

In teaching science there is an emphasis on contemporary and applied science.
