Science is an important subject in primary
schools, and the National Curriculum puts it equal with English and mathematics as one of
the three core subjects. Darell has been fortunate to have had a series of outstanding
science co-ordinators over past years, who developed our awareness of the importance of
science teaching.

In Key Stage 1 the children begin to learn the intellectual and practical skills which
will allow them to learn about and explore science in everyday life.

| Making electrical
circuits |
By the age of seven the children will have studied: living things- animals and plants,
electricity, energy, light and sound.
Key Stage 2 builds on this with an increasing knowledge and understanding of science.

The children learn about scientific questioning and investigation. They learn how to
gather evidence and how to test ideas. They learn how to communicate scientifically using,
for example, computers, graphs, diagrams, tables and bar charts.
In teaching science there is an emphasis on contemporary and applied science.
