Sex education provides an awareness and
respect of self and others. It teaches that individuals are in charge of and responsible
for their own bodies.
Sex education at Darell provides, at an appropriate level, knowledge about the processes
of reproduction and the nature of sexuality and relationships.
It encourages the acquisition of skills and attitudes which allow the pupils to manage
their relationships in a responsible and healthy manner. It helps children to understand
growth and change in themselves and others.
At Key Stage 1 children learn about growth and the special needs of babies. They learn
about the different roles of individuals in families.
By the end of Key Stage 2 children will know the basic biology of human reproduction and
understand some of the skills necessary for successful parenting. They will have some
understanding of the physical, emotional and social changes which take place at puberty.
We have a sex education policy which sets out the aspects of the subject covered year by
year from the early years to year six.
Some parts of the curriculum are integrated into the science teaching of the school and
some aspects are taught separately. The head teacher will arrange for interested parents
to read the details of the policy and to see teaching materials if they so wish.
Older juniors have lessons including one on
adolescence. Parents are invited to preview the videos.
Sex education is delivered no differently from other curriculum subjects by the class
teacher, with the exception of those lessons where discussion is helped by breaking the
class into smaller groups one of which may be led by the school nurse.
The welfare assistant and the class teachers are always willing to help parents needing
advice or who would like to discuss any related matters.
Parents have a legal right to withdraw their children from all or part of the sex
education programme, except that which is part of the National Curriculum science
requirement.
