Physical Education, Dance and Games

Return to main Curriculum Page

We offer a broad choice of physical activities, aiming to promote the children’s own physical development. We aim to teach basic skills in a variety of activities and also to teach children to appreciate skilful and creative performances across a range of activities such as mini-games, games, dance, athletics, gymnastics and swimming.

A school netball match

A PE lesson

Taking part in physical activities helps the children to learn to develop personal qualities such as fairness, commitment and enthusiasm. Children learn to strive to achieve their personal best in games activities. Physical activities can play a key role in social development.

We hope that by taking part the children will learn to value the benefits of physical activities, and continue with games and sports through life. Children are encouraged to aim for success and to enjoy participating in physical activities. There is no restriction based on gender for taking part in any activity.

Our playground is well used for sports, supplemented by our two halls. The big hall, which converts into a gymnasium, is a superb facility for physical education. We also use North Sheen recreation ground, only half a block away from the school, for team games, sports and athletics. The school governors were responsible for having one of the sports pitches made into a dog-free area and suitable for children’s outdoor games.

Sports Day

We have a school sports day for infants and junior children. We take part in the track and field events of the borough competitive sports, where Darell has been very successful in recent years. Besides playing friendly matches with neighbouring schools, our football and netball teams are thriving in their respective leagues.

Swimming

We believe that swimming is part of the primary school curriculum. Unfortunately, school funds cannot meet all the costs of providing swimming lessons, and parents are invited to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost of transport to the swimming pool, admission and tuition.

We are delighted to be asked to present badges and awards gained by our children in their own time. We enter teams for the borough swimming gala and generally promote swimming as a sport.
