Music plays an important part in enriching the
aesthetic life of the school.
Darell has a music specialist on the staff, a privilege for a primary school.
All the classes have special music lessons in which they listen to, appraise, compose and
perform together, music of many different kinds including: European and world music,
classical music, contemporary music, folk and popular music, music of the British Isles,
music from a wide range of other cultures.
Older children have two lessons a week, once with the whole class and once with half a
class. The teacher makes use of voices (singing and speech), and a wide range of tuned and
untuned percussion. There are free extracurricular recorder lessons. Every morning the whole school listens to live or recorded music. We arrange concerts in
the school, given by a number of specialised musicians and groups of players with whom we
have developed contacts.

The
School Orchestra |
Many children go regularly to concerts in London which are arranged through the school. We
have valuable associations with the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and English
National Opera. The children attend opera, ballet and orchestral performances.
Children are given the opportunity to learn to play the violin with a visiting teacher who
gives individual tuition in the school.
There is a school choir which meets out of school hours. All children are encouraged to
join the choir. There is also a school orchestra, open to children who have their own
musical instruments.
