Children in years three to six learn French through songs, rhymes,
role-play and games. The curriculum emphasises speaking and listening
and includes studying cultures where French is spoken. Native speakers
are used whenever possible through parent helpers, DVDs and CDs.
The children are introduced to language learning strategies and
encouraged to see how their increased knowledge about language can help
them with English. Other cross curricular links, for example with
science, geography, history, art or topic work, are also explored.
Links with schools in Canada and France enabled children to exchange
letters with French-speaking students and we hope to develop this
further in future.
