The
Numeracy Hour has drawn attention to the importance of mathematics in
school and in everyday life.
We aim to develop an
enthusiasm for mathematics in all children. We want all pupils to
develop their mathematical abilities to the full.
We have a dedicated maths lesson every day in which the teachers work
with the whole class and with groups of children. There is an emphasis
on mental calculations and interactive oral work with the whole class.
The National Numeracy Strategy divides the subject into five strands.
numbers and the number system includes counting, place value,
estimations, fractions and percentages, ratio and proportion
calculations includes understanding number operations, mental arithmetic,
pencil and paper methods and using calculators
solving problems includes real life problem solving with
money and measures and deciding which methods are best used to solve particular maths
problems.
measures, shape and space includes all kinds of measures and scales,
aspects of maths covered in geometry including flat shapes and 3-D shapes.
handling data collecting, presenting and interpreting mathematical
information.

The children learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide. We expect them to learn their
tables. They should also be able to measure accurately: length, mass, volume and capacity,
area, time, angles and temperature. They should understand fractions, decimal fractions
and common percentages by Year six.
They should be able to read a range of graphs, charts and maps.
As well as teaching mathematical skills and knowledge we also give children an interest in
mathematical ideas and ways of thinking.
