At Darell we have a great commitment to The Arts and encourage our children to experience a wide range of artistic, musical and dramatic activities. As well as being an important part of the curriculum, The Arts provide a range of extra curricular activities and form the basis of many school visits.

The school has a very high reputation for the quality of its art teaching and we are delighted to have had our achievements recognised by the award of Artsmark Gold. It is obvious to the visitor that the visual arts permeate the teaching of the school. We have an interesting collection of prints around the school including original woodcuts and silk-screen prints by adult and child artists.

The children work individually and in groups. They produce art in two and three dimensions and in all different sizes.

We have had a number of artists-in-residence. You may find evidence of the residencies around the school corridors. We have visits from exhibition curators and the children make visits to galleries and exhibitions.

The Music curriculum is equally rich. Many children go regularly to concerts in London which are arranged through the school. We have valuable associations with the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and English National Opera. The children attend opera, ballet and orchestral performances.

Children are given the opportunity to learn to play the violin with a visiting teacher who gives individual tuition in the school.

The orchestra provides opportunities... ...to play a range of instruments

There is a school choir which meets out of school hours. All children are encouraged to join the choir. There is also a school orchestra, open to children who have their own musical instruments.

Drama and dance lessons form an important part of the curriculum. They also contribute to the development of verbal and expressive skills and build the children’s confidence and sensitivity. Children at Darell have opportunities to see plays acted and to perform for an audience.
